SANAA, Aug. 2 (YPA) – UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths said during a Security Council meeting on Thursday that he plans to invite both sides of the Yemeni conflict to Geneva on September 6 for the first round of negotiations.
Griffiths, confirmed that there was a chance for peace in Yemen, adding that returning to the negotiating table will not be easy and urging various parties to create the right atmosphere to begin talks.
“The war in Yemen is escalating despite all efforts, and the Red Sea may become its witness ,” Griffith said. , Stressing the need to be “a settlement in Yemen through a political solution.”
“Our efforts have enabled us to narrow the gap between the parties to the conflict in Yemen,” Griffith said.
On the situation in Hodeidah, the envoy explained that “there is no ground for agreement on Hodeidah” so far, reiterating the call for the importance of reaching a peaceful solution to the situation there, adding that the complexities in this region “will not hinder us from reaching a solution to the Yemen crisis.”
The UN envoy called on the Security Council to support efforts to reduce tension in Hodeidah and support the Geneva negotiations in September.
