Lazzarini: Israeli restrictions on international organizations a “dangerous precedent”

GENEVA, Jan. 01 (YPA) -The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, described the Israeli restrictions imposed on non-governmental organizations in the Gaza Strip as a “dangerous precedent,” warning that failing to push back against them could undermine humanitarian principles.

In a statement published on the X platform on Tuesday, Lazzarini said that the new Israeli restrictions on international NGOs are further compromising the humanitarian operation in the Gaza Strip.

“Coming in the wake of anti-UNRWA legislation, these restrictions are part of a troubling pattern of disregard for international humanitarian law and increasing impediments to aid operations,” he added. “This is a dangerous precedent.”

Lazzarini emphasized that failing to push back against attempts to control the work of aid organizations will further undermine the basic humanitarian principles of neutrality, independence, impartiality and humanity underpinning aid work across the world.
