‘Yemen is in catastrophic position in terms of several mine victims’: ECMA

SANAA, Dec. 11 (YPA) – The Sanaa-based Executive Center for Mine Action (ECMA) announced on Tuesday that landmines and other remnants of war have continued to pose a severe threat and to violate the basic right of citizens since the beginning of the Saudi-led coalition’s war began in March 2015.

In a statement, the center pointed out that the countryside and cities of Yemen have turned into death fields that threaten civilians daily, stressing that this situation undermined their rights to food, security and return to their homes.

The total number of victims of cluster bombs and mines has reached 3,952, including 2,504 children and 1,102 women, as of December 2023, with6, 737 wounded.

The center also noted that Yemen occupies a catastrophic position on the global map, as it ranks as the third country in the world in terms of the number of mine victims.

The ECMA consistently reports a high number of civilian casualties, including many children, from mines and unexploded ordnance across various provinces such as Hodeida, Bayda, Marib, Jawf, Nihem, and Saada.
