UN Chief calls for stronger international solidarity with Palestinians
NEW YORK, Nov. 19 (YPA) – United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, called for strengthening international solidarity with the Palestinian people and supporting their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state, noting that Palestinian suffering has reached unprecedented levels over the past two years.
In a statement published Wednesday on the UN’s official website marking the “International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People,” which falls on November 29 annually, Guterres said the occasion comes after two years of “intense suffering, and the urgently needed ceasefire in the Gaza Strip,” referencing the recent Israeli occupation attacks.
The Secretary-General explained that Palestinians in Gaza are “mourning tens of thousands of victims, including a huge number of children,” pointing to the widespread hunger, disease, and psychological trauma, as well as the extensive destruction of homes, schools, hospitals, and essential infrastructure in the Strip.
