UN Security Council rejects resolution to extend Iran sanctions relief

NEW YORK, Sept. 26 (YPA) -The UN Security Council on Friday, September 26, rejected a draft resolution submitted by Russia and China to extend Resolution 2231, marking the failure of the last attempt to delay the reimposition of sanctions on Tehran

The draft resolution failed to secure the votes required for adoption by the UN Security Council. It received four votes in favour, nine against and two abstentions.

According to diplomatic observers, the failure of the resolution reflects growing divisions within the Council.

They attributed the outcome to the alignment of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany with the United States in opposing Iran, a stance Tehran considers hostile and counterproductive to diplomatic efforts, including a recent agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency aimed at reviving dialogue and easing tensions.
