Tribal sheikh shot dead in Yemen’s Aden

ADEN, Sept. 27 (YPA) – A prominent tribal leader was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden on Friday, medical sources reported.

According to sources, Sheikh Mehdi Al-Aqrabi came under fire in the Bir Ahmed area while heading to the Ibn Taymiyyah Mosque for Friday prayers.

According to eyewitnesses, unidentified gunmen opened fire on the sheikh as he was exiting the mosque, leaving him severely wounded.

He was taken to the American Hospital in the city but was pronounced dead after sustaining critical injuries in an assassination attempt.

Al-Aqrabi had been released by the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) several months ago, after being detained in connection with land-related disputes in the city in March.
