Three killed, 12 injured in IED attack on STC’s forces in Abyan

ABYAN, Sept. 05 (YPA) – At least three members of UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) were killed and about 12 others wounded on Friday when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Yemen’s southern Abyan province, local sources said.

The attack occurred in the Mudiyah district and targeted a military unit from the STC’s Third Support and Reinforcement Brigade.

According to the sources, the attack may have been carried out by militants linked to al-Qaeda, possibly with support from Islah-affiliated fighters.

Sources added that the STC ambulances rushed to the scene, evacuating the wounded to Al-Muhnaf Hospital in the town of Lawdar for treatment.

There were conflicting accounts of the incident. STC sources attributed the deaths and injuries to a vehicle rollover in Mudiyah—an area where over 700 fighters, including leaders, have been killed in attacks since “Operation Eastern Arrows” began in August 2022.

Other sources reported that al-Qaeda fighters targeted two STC military vehicles, including a newly deployed armored vehicle, with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), during a military advance by the STC in Wadi Omran, before the forces reached their destination.
