Hamas welcomes UN Security Council call for Gaza ceasefire

GAZA, Aug. 28 (YPA) – The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) welcomed the statement issued by members of the UN Security Council, except the US, calling for an “immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire” in Gaza and affirming that the use of starvation as a weapon is prohibited under international humanitarian law.

“The statement by the Security Council members, issued without US participation, highlights the catastrophic humanitarian situation created by the fascist occupation in the Gaza Strip and the severity of the spreading famine—particularly its impact on the children and innocent civilians, hundreds of whom have already died of hunger due to the occupation’s systematic starvation policy,” Hamas said in a statement .

“We view this international stance as an advanced step demonstrating broad consensus in condemning the crime of genocide and starvation committed by the Zionist enemy against over two million besieged Palestinians in Gaza,” the statement read.

Hamas added, ” The continued obstructive US position preventing the issuance of binding resolutions makes it a full partner in the crime and responsible for the famine and massacres endured by our people.”

The movement called on the Security Council to uphold its responsibilities and take practical steps to deter the government of war criminal Netanyahu, compel it to halt the brutal genocide that has been ongoing for nearly 23 months, and hold the occupation’s war criminal leaders accountable for their crimes against humanity.
