CANBERRA, Aug. 24 (YPA) – Unprecedented protest rallies were staged on Sunday in several Australian cities to denounce Israeli genocidal war and starvation in the Gaza Strip.
Local ABC News network described the demonstrations as “one of the largest mass demonstrations in the country’s history,” stating that they were held to express support for Palestine.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators, according to the ABC, demanded that Australia halted arms trade with the occupation and imposed economic sanctions on the Israeli occupation.
Police in Brisbane, the capital of the eastern Australian state of Queensland, reported that approximately 10,000 people took to the streets of the city in support of Palestine.
The demonstrators called on the Australian government to take urgent and strong action against the occupation, asserting that “Tel Aviv” is committing massacres and genocide in Gaza.
In Sydney, New South Wales, a pro-Palestine march began in Hyde Park with the participation of thousands of demonstrators and ended at Belmore Park.
Meanwhile, over 2,000 demonstrators staged a demonstration in Canberra in support of Palestine, in addition to a similar demonstration in Hobart, Tasmania.
In the western city of Perth, almost 25,000 people participated in a demonstration in support of Palestine, demanding sanctions against the occupation to end its siege of Gaza.
In the southern city of Adelaide, thousands of people gathered in front of the city’s parliament building in a pro-Palestine march, chanting Freedom for Palestine and carrying Palestinian banners and flags.
In Melbourne, Victoria, more than 100,000 people marched in support of Palestine, according to the non-governmental organization Action Group for Palestine. The city’s police announced that 10,000 people partook in the demonstration
