6.1-magnitude quake hits western Turkey

ISTANBUL, Aug. 10 (YPA)- A magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred in Turkey’s northwestern province of on Sunday evening, the Turkish disaster management agency (AFAD) reported.

According to AFAD, the quake was centred in Balıkesir and was felt in Istanbul, as well as across western and northwestern Turkey, extending to parts of the southwest.

The quake occurred at around 7:53pm local time.

Local media reports that several buildings were collapsed in the town of Sindirgi, near the epicenter of the earthquake.

According to Russia Today, preliminary reports indicate that the tremors were also felt in Bulgaria, Greece, and Cyprus.
