German club backs out of signing Israeli player “Weissman” after public protests

BERLIN, Aug. 05 (YPA) – German club Fortuna Düsseldorf has officially announced that it will not proceed with the signing of Israeli player “Shon Weissman,” despite talks between the two parties reaching an advanced stage.

In a brief statement, the club stated that it had sought to sign the player but ultimately decided against the deal without revealing further details.

According to the German newspaper Bild, this decision came after a wave of protests by the club’s fans, who rejected the deal through online campaigns and public statements. The newspaper also added that the player’s previous posts on social media regarding the war in Gaza sparked widespread anger among the club’s supporters, who considered them inconsistent with the club’s principles and values, prompting the club’s management to reconsider its position.

This development reflects increased sensitivity in European sports circles regarding players’ political stances, especially with the escalation of tensions following the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, which has led to significant humanitarian repercussions.
