German Federation calls for providing Islamic religious education classes nationwide

SANAA, July 29 (YPA) – The German Education and Training Union called for Islamic religious education classes to be provided in schools across Germany.

The union’s president, Geir Hard Brand, said in statements to the German Deutschland media network: We are working to ensure that all believers are able to talk about their religion at school and receive relevant information about their religion and other religions.

Brand urged politicians to introduce and expand Islamic religious education in schools nationwide, demanding the provision of qualified personnel and the necessary funding, and the immediate implementation of measures to achieve this goal in the medium term.

For his part, the president of the German Teachers’ Union, Stefan Doll, believes that religion classes in public schools represent a counterweight to fundamentalist beliefs.

According to estimates, there are about 5.5 million Muslims living in Germany.
