US State Department approves sale of surface-to-air missiles to Egypt

WASHINGTON, July 25 (YPA) – The US State Department has approved a potential sale of advanced air defense systems to Egypt for approximately $4.67 billion.

The sale aims to enhance the air defense capabilities of Egypt, a key strategic ally of the United States.

The sale includes NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems), ground-to-air missile systems produced by RTX Corporation, formerly known as Raytheon.

According to a statement from the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major non-NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.

Egypt, is the second largest recipient of US military aid, after “Israel”, reflecting its pivotal role in regional stability.

It is worth noting that when Republican President Donald Trump returned to the White House last January, his administration ordered a halt to nearly all foreign aid, with exceptions made for funding to “Israel” and Egypt.
