GENEVA, June 24 (YPA) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Tuesday condemned the Israeli bombing of Evin Prison in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
In a news conference, the OHCHR spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan considered the bombing a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.
“Evin Prison is not a military target, and targeting it constitutes a serious violation of international law,” he added. The prison houses political prisoners, including journalists and activists.”
Al-Khaitan added that the OHCHR had received reports of fires breaking out inside the prison and an unspecified number of injuries resulting the bombing.
This came after Israeli aircraft launched an airstrike on Monday targeting the gates of Evin Prison, a move media sources said was aimed at enabling prisoners to escape.
For their part, Iranian authorities denied any disturbances inside the prison, asserting that the situation was under control, but acknowledged that parts of the facility were damaged in the bombing.
The Iranian judiciary described the attack as a Zionist violation of international norms.
