OCCUPIED PALESTINE, May 28 (YPA) – Former Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, accused the occupation forces of committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip, in the context of its ongoing aggression for nearly 20 months.
In an interview with NPR, Olmert said that what Israel is doing in Gaza amounts to full-fledged war crimes, calling for an immediate halt to the military operations that have widely affected civilians and infrastructure.
This statement comes at a time of mounting international criticism of the Israeli occupation government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, wanted by international courts, against the backdrop of massive destruction and the fall of tens of thousands of civilian casualties in the largest military campaign witnessed in Gaza since its occupation in 1967.
Olmert added: “We cannot justify what is happening in Gaza under any security pretext. The way the war is being conducted embarrasses Israel and puts it on a collision course with international law.”
Olmert’s statement is one of the strongest positions issued by a former senior Zionist official, and it reinforces the international discourse of accusation directed at the occupation government in the halls of human rights institutions and international courts, where dozens of complaints are already being examined regarding serious violations that amount to war crimes against humanity.
