ABYAN, May 24 (YPA) – About seven of al-Qaeda members, including field leaders, were killed on Saturday in a US airstrike in Abyan Governorate, which is under the control of Emirati factions in southern Yemen.
An informed local source confirmed that an airstrike targeted field leaders of al-Qaeda members in Maudiyah district, east of Abyan, including Salem Qasim al-Kazemi, known as “Hassan al-Sanaani,” who had survived an assassination attempt in an airstrike last month in the same district.
He indicated that the US airstrike came after the failure of the Emirati factions to confront al-Qaeda attacks in the district over the past months.
The US raid on the organization’s sites in Maudiyah came after two people were targeted yesterday in an airstrike in the al-Shamateet area of Ayn district in Shabwa governorate, and their bodies were charred.
Al-Qaeda elements in Maudiyah have been carrying out surprise attacks against STC factions since the latter announced Operation “Arrows of the East” to seize control of Islah Party camps in mid-August 2022 and these attacks left hundreds dead and wounded, including prominent leaders, and dozens of military vehicles destroyed by explosive devices.
Al-Qaeda elements had named their operations against the Emirati factions “Arrows of Truth,” similar to the “Arrows of the East” operation of the STC factions affiliated with the UAE.
