Bread price hike deepens economic woes in Aden

ADEN, May 15 (YPA) – Bakeries’ association in Aden made a new agreement with the government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition, which involves raising bread prices to exorbitant levels beyond the reach of citizens.

Abduljalil Abdu, head of the Bakeries’ Association in Aden, stated that an agreement had been reached with the Ministry of Industry and Trade in Aden to sell “a kilogram of bread for 2,000 riyals.”

The association’s head indicated that bakeries would resume operations starting Thursday, following the agreement, after a 24-hour strike carried out by bakeries in Aden in protest of their inability to make any profits due to the currency collapse in the coalition-held areas in southern and eastern Yemen.

It is worth noting that the commercial sector in the coalition-held areas periodically closes its doors in protest of the deterioration of the local currency against the dollar, with the exchange rate reaching 2,556 riyals per dollar in those areas.

The new price is too high for the citizens in Aden, especially given the declining purchasing power of the local currency and the lack of wage increases to match the inflation of the local currency.
