Mukalla shops enforce Saudi riyal for credit purchases amid local currency collapse

HADRAMOUT, May 02 (YPA) – For the first time, advertisements have appeared in the city of Al-Mukalla, the capital of Hadramaut province under the control of the Saudi-led coalition, mandating transactions in Saudi riyals instead of the local currency.

Several stores have now mandated payment in Saudi Riyals for credit purchases by consumers, as the Yemeni Riyal continues its sharp decline, starting Wednesday, May 1, 2025.

This move marks a new sign of declining confidence in the local currency and highlights the ongoing economic crisis’s impact on citizens’ daily transactions.
