German police arrest students in solidarity with Palestine, threaten others with deportation

BERLIN, April 17 (YPA) – German police arrested a group of students at Humboldt University in Berlin while they were participating in a solidarity demonstration in support of the Palestinian cause.

The demonstration was in protest against the Israeli aggression in Gaza and the Berlin government’s plans to deport four pro-Palestinian activists.

The students stormed a building containing the Emil Fischer Hall and raised banners in the windows with slogans against the occupation, such as “You are complicit in genocide,” “There is no state but Palestine 48,” and “Intifada until victory.”

Outside, about 20 people gathered in solidarity with the protesters, chanting slogans against the occupation, such as “Freedom for Palestine,” “Boycott Israel,” “No borders, no deportation,” “Germany is a fascist state,” and “Resistance is an international right.”

Despite university administration requests to leave the building, the protesters refused, locked the doors, and erected barricades. This necessitated the intervention of the police, who imposed a tight security cordon and arrested at least five demonstrators outside the building.

Police used special tools to open doors and remove banners before evacuating the building and detaining participants in the demonstration.
