OCCUPIED PALESTINE, March 31 (YPA) – Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Monday morning that he has decided to appoint retired Vice Admiral Eli Sharvit, a former commander of the Israeli Navy, as the next head of the Shin Bet security agency.
A statement from Netanyahu’s office said the decision came after Netanyahu interviewed seven candidates.
The retired vice admiral is set to replace current Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar on April 10, who was dismissed by the government on March 21 following “a lack of trust,” Netanyahu said.
Sharvit served 36 years in the Israeli army, including five years as the navy chief. He takes over an agency still reeling from its failure to anticipate Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. His predecessor, Ronen Bar, was dismissed on March 16 amid internal turmoil.
The Shin Bet had earlier admitted intelligence lapses before Oct. 7 and indirectly blamed Netanyahu’s “failed policies over the years.” The PM now seeks to rebuild the agency’s credibility under Sharvit’s leadership.
