SOCOTRA, Feb. 25 (YPA) – The UAE is planning to send one of its most prominent intelligence personnel under the guise of advocacy activities to the Yemeni island of Socotra, located east of the Gulf of Aden.
Local sources on the island reported that the well-known preacher “Salem bin Ali Al-Shuwaihi,” who is believed to be an Emirati intelligence agent disguised as a religious figure, is expected to arrive in Socotra today, Tuesday, to open a mosque funded by the UAE in the Muri area. According to the sources, this step comes as part of an attempt to change religious concepts and societal culture among the island’s residents.
The sources described “Al-Shuwaihi” as one of the figures not welcomed by the locals, due to what they called his insolence towards the island’s residents by directing insults and threats at anyone who opposes the UAE’s influence in Socotra.
It is worth noting that the UAE had imposed “Al-Shuwaihi” as the preacher of the Eid al-Fitr sermon by force of arms, which sparked widespread resentment among the residents, prompting many of them to boycott praying behind him.
