Massive shipment of spoiled Egyptian flour arrives at Aden port

ADEN, Feb. 20 (YPA) -A massive shipment of spoiled Egyptian flour, exceeding 5,000 tons, has arrived at the port of Aden, amid growing concerns about attempts to introduce it into local markets.

Informed sources at the port reported that the shipment, owned by a local merchant, arrived on a ship after a sea journey lasting more than four months in the Red Sea.

The sources clarified that the long shipping period caused the flour to spoil and become rotten due to exposure to water and humidity

The shipment consists of various types of flour, including 2,500 tons packed in 50 kg bags, 500 tons in 25 kg bags, as well as 1,600 tons of imported flour in 50 kg bags and 400 tons in 25 kg bags.

Preliminary information indicates that this shipment was produced in November of last year (2024) or earlier, given the extended shipping period and the spoilage.

Originally, the shipment was destined for the port of Hodeidah but was redirected due to restrictions on flour imports. After a stop in Djibouti, the merchant rerouted it to the port of Aden, disregarding its prolonged stay at sea and its deteriorated condition.

The source expressed deep concern about the pressures being exerted on Yemen Standardization, Metrology and Quality Control Organization to allow this spoiled shipment into the markets.

They emphasized the importance of the Organization’ s role in protecting consumers and preventing non-compliant products from entering the market, praising its previous efforts in this regard despite the challenges.

This shipment of spoiled flour sparks significant health and economic concerns and raises questions about the mechanisms for monitoring imported food into Yemen.

It highlights the need to activate the role of relevant authorities to protect the health and safety of citizens
