At least 60 passengers killed in plane, helicopter collision near Washington

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (YPA) – At least 60 passengers and four crew members were killed on Wednesday when an a Sikorsky helicopter collided a Bombardier passenger plane while approaching the Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington.

The US Federal Aviation Administration said that crash occurred in some of the most tightly controlled and monitored airspace in the world, just over 3 miles (5 kilometers) south of the White House and the U.S. Capitol.

“We are now at the point where we are switching from a rescue operation to a recovery operation,” Washington fire chief John Donnelly said at a Thursday morning news conference. “We don’t believe there are any survivors.”

He added that att least 28 bodies were pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River, where the aircraft plummeted into.
