UAE-backed STC factions deploy heavily in Aden after clashes with presidential guard

ADEN, Jan. 01 (YPA) – The Yemeni southern city of Aden witnessed escalating tensions on Wednesday as the UAE-backed factions deployed dozens of military vehicles, including armored vehicles, across the city.

This comes after clashes erupted between the “Protection Battalion” of Rashad Al-Alimi, the president of the “Presidential Leadership Council,” loyal to the Saudi-led coalition, and forces loyal to the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) in the vicinity of Maashiq Palace.

The deployment, which included “Emergency and Security Support” of the STC factions, saw a heavy presence in key areas of the city, including main streets, coastal sites, and major neighborhoods such as Al-Tawahi, Crater, and Khormaksar. Armed checkpoints were also established to enhance control.

On Tuesday, the city witnessed clashes involving gunfire exchanges between the two factions in the Crater area. The STC forces reportedly seized control of a security point belonging to Al-Alimi’s protection and gained access to the lower gates of Maashiq Palace.

This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing power struggle between the UAE-backed STC and the Saudi-backed Presidential Leadership Council, both of whom are part of the Saudi-led coalition.

The situation remains tense, with fears of further clashes and a potential escalation of violence in the city.
