UN envoy: “Yemen at two crucial crossroads”
SANAA, Dec. 11 (YPA) – UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said on Wednesday that “Yemen faces a critical crossroads; either continue on a path of catastrophic conflict or cooperate to resolve economic issues to pave the way for growth and possible peace dividends.”
This came in his briefing this evening, Wednesday, to the UN Security Council on the latest developments and peace efforts in Yemen.
The envoy noted that any escalation of violence in any Yemeni province highlights the need for everyone to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians. He added that “Such incidents underscore the urgent need for a ceasefire agreement.”
Grundberg urged Yemenis to engage seriously with the efforts he is leading to implement the roadmap, which aims to achieve a ceasefire, implement economic measures including sustainable salary payments, and pave the way for a comprehensive political process.
He pointed out that “this goal is still achievable,” as he said.
The UN envoy called on all parties to fulfill their obligations regarding the humanitarian file and release detainees in accordance with the principle of “all for all.”
