ADEN, Oct. 17 (YPA) – A new military force was deployed in Yemen’s southern city of Aden to strengthen the powers of the President of the “Leadership Council,” Rashad Al-Alimi, in light of the tensions taking place in the city between the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Informed local sources reported Thursday that Saudi Arabia deployed new factions of the “military police” with what is called a “southern identity” in the streets of Aden to control members of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) factions loyal to the UAE to ensure control of the city and prevent any acts of chaos.
The sources explained that the “military police” factions set up armed checkpoints in the city’s streets to verify the identity of the STC members wearing military uniforms.
Saudi Arabia’s new moves in Aden seek to strengthen its security control over the city with the widening differences between Al-Alimi and the STC president, Aidaroos Al-Zubaidi, according to the sources.
The sources pointed out that the Saudi moves were met with annoyance from the leaders of the STC factions in Aden.
It is likely that the STC factions will be removed from the city in implementation of the so-called “Riyadh Agreement” signed in November following the confrontations that Aden witnessed during August of 2019.
