BRUSSELS, Aug. 28 (YPA) – The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said on Wednesday, “Actions that violate the status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem (Quds) constitute a threat to regional stability.”
This came in a post on his account on the “X” platform on Wednesday, in response to Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi’s call on the UN Security Council and the international community to stop “Israel’s illegal actions that violate the legal status of historical and sacred places in Jerusalem.”
Borrell indicated that he shares Safadi’s concerns about the status of the holy sites.
He touched on the actions that open the way for violations issued by the “Israeli Minister of National Security,” Itamar Ben Gvir, who led the intrusions on Al-Aqsa Mosque and made statements regarding the construction of a synagogue in the mosque.
Borrell affirmed that these concerns are “completely legitimate,” stressing the need for the international community to examine this issue.
On Tuesday, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reported that the Israeli Ministry of Heritage sought to consolidate the occupation narrative through what it called “indicative intrusions” targeting tens of thousands of Jews and foreign tourists and allocated two million shekels for that.
On Monday, Ben Gvir claimed in press statements that “the government’s policy allows prayer in Al-Aqsa Mosque. There is an equal law between Jews and Muslims. I would build a synagogue there.”
This is the first time that Ben Gvir spoke about establishing a “synagogue” inside Al-Aqsa Mosque, after he called many times in the past months for Jews to be allowed to pray in the mosque.
Israeli settlers carry out almost daily storms into the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied city of Al-Quds with heavy protection from the Israeli occupation police, amid escalating calls from extremist Jewish groups to demolish Al-Aqsa Mosque and build the “Third Temple” on its ruins.
On July 19, the International Court of Justice issued its opinion on the legal consequences resulting from the Israeli occupation’s policies and practices in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 and the consequences of the occupation’s behavior on other countries after a legal process that lasted 18 months.
