US military completes withdrawal of its forces from its last base in Niger

WORLD. Aug. 05 (YPA) -The US has completed withdrawing its forces from the last base in Niger, the US Department of Defense and Niger’s Ministry of Defense announced in a joint statement on Monday.

The withdrawal of US forces and assets from Air Base 201 in Agadez has been completed, according to statement.

This effort began on May 19 following the mutual establishment of withdrawal conditions and coordination will continue between US and Nigerien armed forces over the coming weeks to ensure the full withdrawal is complete as planned, the statement read.

“Over the past decade, US troops have trained Niger’s forces and supported partner-led counterterrorism missions against Islamic State and al Qaeda in the region.”

“The effective cooperation and communication between the US and Nigerien armed forces ensured that this turnover was finished ahead of schedule and without complications”.

Agence France-Presse reported in early July that the United States had completed the withdrawal of its military forces from its airbase in the Nigerien capital, Niamey.

By the end of 2023, approximately 1,100 US troops were stationed in Niger, most of them at a base near Agadez in the northern part of the country.
