ICJ to consider new request from South Africa to halt Israeli attack on Rafah

WORLD, May 16 (YPA) – South Africa intended to request from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Thursday, an immediate cessation of the Israeli occupation’s attack on Rafah, describing it as a “genocidal operation” that threatens the lives of Palestinians.

The ICJ will hear from senior lawyers representing Pretoria over the course of two days, during which they will demand an order to stop the firing in Gaza, with Israel set to present its response on Friday.

In January, the ICJ ordered Israel to do everything possible to prevent acts of genocide and enable aid to reach Gaza. However, the court did not go as far as to issue a ceasefire order, and South Africa’s argument now is that the situation on the ground, especially in Rafah, requires a new move by the court.

South Africa stated in its report, “As the evidence shows, Israel’s conduct in its military operations in Rafah and other places in Gaza is in itself genocide,” adding that “an order must be issued to it to stop.”

The orders of the International Court of Justice, which adjudicates disputes between states, are legally binding, but it lacks means for enforcement.
