Number of detainees in pro-Palestine protests at US universities rises to 1700

WORLD, May 02 (YPA) – The number of detainees during protests at universities across US has risen to 1700, the Washington Post reported.

Confrontations between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and police continue at universities across the United States, a day after New York police stormed Columbia University, which protesters had occupied, and arrested about 300 people at Columbia and City College of New York.

Police arrested 15 protesters at Fordham University and 34 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including members of the faculty.

According to the reports, most of the detainees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison had been released without charges, but four people were detained on charges ranging from resisting arrest to assaulting a police officer, according to a press release from the UW-Madison police.

The Hanover, New Hampshire police department confirmed late on Wednesday that law enforcement officials had made arrests at Dartmouth College, without officially announcing the number of detainees.

Police at the University of Texas at Dallas evacuated a camp set up Wednesday morning and charged 17 protesters with criminal trespass.

New York University said it was assessing damage to buildings and campus grounds, where New York Police Department officers arrested at least 173 protesters on Tuesday night.

A New York Police Department official said several city police officers went to an on-campus encampment at Fordham University on Wednesday afternoon and arrested pro-Palestinian protesters who refused to leave.
