Biden praises “Czechoslovakia” for supporting Ukraine

WORLD, April 16 (YPA) – President Biden on Monday praised “Czechoslovakia” for supporting Ukraine against Russia — referring to a country that hasn’t existed since the end of 1992.

During his meeting with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala at the White House on Monday, Biden mistakenly mentioned his country’s name but quickly corrected himself to say “the Czech Republic.”

This mistake can be described as an individual error and reflects the famous saying “Instead of applying kohl to her eyes, he blinded her,” as the country has been known as “the Czech Republic” since its establishment.

Biden said, “I cannot express enough our appreciation for your frankness and the support of the people of the Czech Republic in supporting the people of Ukraine.”

The separation of Czechia and Slovakia ended 75 years of a Czechoslovak state, a period interrupted by six years of Nazi occupation during the Second World War and marked by more than four decades of Communist rule as a Soviet satellite.
