German frigate “Hessen” opens fire on US drone in Red Sea

WORLD, Feb.  29 (YPA) – The German frigate “Hessen”, deployed in the Red Sea as part of the EU operation Eunavfor Aspides, opened fire on a drone belonging to US allies, the German news agency reported.

Defense Ministry spokesman Michael Stempfle confirmed that the attack occurred unintentionally when the frigate detected the convoy in the operational area, and initially it was not possible to identify it as a convoy belonging to an allied country.

The agency added that the frigate attacked the convoy without being able to shoot it down, and it later turned out that it was not a threat.

The agency emphasized that the American convoys were not involved in the operation according to the ministry.

Previously, the German Ministry of Defense claimed that the German frigate had shot down two drones belonging to what it described as the Houthis.

In solidarity with Gaza, The Yemeni armed forces launch attacks on Israeli-linked ships or ships heading to the occupied ports in addition to targeting the US and UK ships in retaliation to aggression on the country.
