Grundberg stresses importance of resuming Yemen political process to make peace
NEW YORK, Feb. 14 (YPA) – UN envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, said on Wednesday it was agreed to resume the political process inside Yemen and to work with his office to activate commitments related to the ceasefire and take measures to improve living conditions.
During a briefing to the Security Council, Grundberg pointed out that the scale of the economic challenges in Yemen is enormous, adding that the power outages and high prices in areas controlled by the Riyadh-backed government have become worrying.
In light of the current transitions, he stressed the impotence of focusing to reduce the escalation at the regional level, and an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, in addition to protecting the progress achieved in Yemen until an agreement is reached.
Grundberg noted that everyone still needs to participate in UN-sponsored sustainable dialogue structures to achieve these measures and address other priorities.
The UN envoy explained that “peace is a political project, and it is the main basis for reaching an internationally supported solution.”
He stressed the importance of the role of the Security Council, saying that Yemen deserves to draw the attention of Council members, and that they are responsible for creating a real opportunity for peace.
