Aden launches urgent appeals to reduce famine

ADEN, Jan. 31 (YPA) – Aden-based Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced an imminent famine affecting citizens in southern Yemen in the coming days.

The Chamber said in a statement that the living situation has reached the point where most residents are no longer able to secure their food needs.

Many families are limited to eating one meal a day, the statement added, indicating that there are catastrophic consequences and imminent economic and social unrest.

It affirmed that that the current situation may lead the city to many economic and social disasters that are imminent that may looms a dangerous development and consequences.

On Tuesday, the Chamber’s statement called on Saudi Arabia and the UAE to intervene urgently to save people from starvation and support the economy from collapse.

This comes after the price of a dollar rose to 1,630 riyals.

The coalition-backed Aden government has been unable to carry out economic reforms after printing nearly YR 6 trillion worth of new bills without monetary cover during 2016-2021.
