JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 26 (YPA) – South Africa welcomed on Friday the ruling issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which stipulates that the Zionist enemy “Israel” must take measures to prevent any acts of genocide in Gaza.
The South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “Today represents a decisive victory for the rule of international law and an important turning point in the pursuit of justice for the Palestinian people.”
The ministry added: “We hoped that the court would issue a ceasefire decision in Gaza in order to implement the temporary orders it issued, but we did what was necessary to protect the lives of citizens in the Gaza Strip.”
It affirmed that the government and people of South Africa stand with the Palestinian people.
Earlier today, the ICJ held a session at its headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, to issue a preliminary decision in South Africa’s lawsuit against Israel for committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
ICJ called on Israel to submit a report on the aforementioned measures to the court within one month from the date of issuance of the decision.
A large majority of members of the court’s 17-judge panel voted in favor of taking urgent measures that meet most of what South Africa requested, with the exception of directing an order to stop the war on Gaza.
For her part, the president of the court, Justice Joan E. Donoghue, said that South Africa has the right to file the lawsuit, and Israel’s request to dismiss it cannot be accepted. She added, “We have the authority to issue emergency measures in the genocide case against Israel.”
