France begins to withdraw its troops from Niger

WORLD, Oct. 10 (YPA) – The withdrawal of French troops from Niger begins on Tuesday, under the escort of the Niger’s army, according to the military council, which came to power in a coup in July.

The military council said, in a statement, that the Departure of the first convoy under the guard of our defense and security forces will begin Tuesday, October 10 .

Following meetings and communication between our authorities and the French side, a timetable for the withdrawal of its forces was set by mutual agreement,” the statement read.

Shortly after seizing power, the coup leaders issued a resolution calling for the withdrawal of some 1,400 French troops from the Sahel country.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that his troops would leave the country at the end of September.

At the end of last week, several convoy movements were recorded between the forward bases in the northwest, where 400 soldiers are deployed, and the capital Niamey, Nigerien and French security sources told AFP.
