Iraq confirms implementation of border agreement with Iran

WORLD, Aug 29 (YPA) – Iraqi government spokesman Bassem Al-Awadi confirmed that Iraq has implemented its commitment with Iran regarding preventing infiltration of militants, extradition of wanted persons, disarmament and removal of camps on the border.

Al-Awadi said in a post on his account on the “X” platform, that “the most important principles of foreign policy is that Iraq should not be a party to harm its neighbors, and that Iraqi sovereignty requires security understandings to protect Iraq’s borders from any aggression.”

He added: “Therefore, Iraq signed an agreement with Iran that provides for preventing the infiltration of militants, extradition, disarmament and removal of camps, and Iraq has implemented its commitment.”

This comes a day after the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced an agreement with Iraq to disarm terrorist groups in Kurdistan and close their military headquarters by September, remove them from the military barracks they established, and transfer them to camps chosen by Iraq.

Tehran threatened that if the deal was not implemented on time, “we will fulfill our responsibilities towards terrorist groups in Iraqi Kurdistan.”
