WORLD, Aug 27 (YPA) – A military helicopter carrying about 20 US Marines crashed during a training exercise off the coast of Darwin, north of Australia’s mainland, on Sunday, local media reported.
According to the public network “ABC”, a number of people were rescued after the Osprey Helicopter crashed near the northern Tiwi Islands. No casualties were reported.
Australian defense spokesperson confirmed the “aircraft incident” occurred during Exercise Predators Run 2023, which involves military personnel from Australia, the United States, Indonesia, the Philippines and East Timor.
“Initial reports suggest the incident involves United States defense personnel and that Australian Defense Force members were not involved,” he added.
The V-22 Osprey helicopter is capable of vertical take-off and landing, and has movable wings that can be directed upwards to give the helicopter the ability to maneuver or forward to fly horizontally as a normal aircraft.
