WORLD, Aug 27 (YPA) – In the first visit by a high-ranking Canadian official to China in four years, the environment minister arrived in Beijing on Saturday for talks on climate change and biodiversity next week.
Stephen Gilbo will participate from Monday to Wednesday in the annual general meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development.
“Climate change and environmental issues know no borders. We cannot address these existential threats without engaging a wide range of stakeholders and partners,” the minister said. “But parts of Canada’s political class, especially the conservative opposition, reject the visit, which they call a “betrayal”.”
Defending the visit, Gilbo told Radio Canada: “I think my going is worth it, to strengthen this cooperation on climate, biodiversity, and maybe also start rebuilding bridges with China diplomatically.”
