WORLD, July 29 (YPA) – The United Nations has condemned the military coup that toppled Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, but said it would continue its humanitarian operations in the country, despite the suspension of air aid following the coup.
In a statement unanimously approved by the UN Security Council on Friday, the 15 council members strongly condemned the efforts to unconstitutionally change the legitimate authority of Niger.
The statement called for the immediate and unconditional release of Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum.
It stressed the need to protect Bazoum, his family and members of his government.
The Council members expressed “concern about the negative impact of unconstitutional changes of governance in the region, increased terrorist activities and the deteriorating socio-economic situation”.
