Britain plans to submit new draft resolution to Security Council on Yemen

SANAA, May 19 (YPA) – Britain has sought during the past few days to mobilize international support among the member states of the UN Security Council in favor of a project that includes economic and political agreements based on a two-state solution in north and south in Yemen.

According to diplomatic sources at the United Nations, hopefully it would be adopted by the council but the proposal, which presented by a number of the council’s major countries, was dropped by the agenda of the Security Council’s meeting that was held on Wednesday .

The British proposals that were submitted to the Security Council had referred to their endeavors to ensure the separation of southern Yemen, during any upcoming settlement, in a step that may complicate the course of the peaceful solution that Sanaa requires to guarantee Yemen’s independence, unity and territorial sovereignty.

According to Western diplomats, “Britain may present a resolution to the Security Council in the next session to lift the sanctions against the Saleh family and Ansarullah Movement.”

The British vision included an economic agreement to unite “Yemen’s scattered resources” that could be shared, the vision stipulated addressing long-term political issues, such as the “future of the south,” according to the statements of the British ambassador to Yemen, Richard Oppenheim.

Oppenheim noted that the Saudi-formed Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, was clear that the issue of the south needs to be addressed as part of the discussions of a political settlement, indicating that the UN Security Council, including the United Kingdom, supports this view.
