NEW YORK, May 17 (YPA) – The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, urged all parties to build on the progress they have made so far and take decisive steps leading to a comprehensive peaceful solution.
Grundberg confirmed, in a briefing he gave to the UN Security Council on Wednesday regarding the situation in Yemen, that he would continue to work with what he described as “the Yemeni parties, to reach a cease-fire and start a political process,” in a sign to the United Nations’insistence on adopting unrealistic terminology about the war in Yemen and portraying it as a “civil war” and avoiding admitting that Yemen being subject to an international war.
“The truce provided a favorable environment and a starting point to build on,” he added. “But the fragility of the military situation, the deterioration of the economic situation and the challenges that the Yemeni people face every day always remind us why a more comprehensive agreement is necessary.”
He went on to say, “continuous reports of violence on various fronts, particularly in Al-Jawf, Taiz, Marib and Saada, show the fragility of the current situation and underscore the need for an official ceasefire.”
Grundberg welcomed the Sanaa government’s release of four journalists on May 3, which marked the 30th anniversary of International Press Freedom Day.
In the briefing, the UN envoy noted that only a comprehensive political process could forge a new sustainable political partnership and achieve the promise of a secure and economically stable future. This political process must address complex issues related to Yemen’s long-term future, provided that it begins as soon as possible.
