Grundberg stresses need to increase destinations for flights from Sanaa airport

SANAA, May 03 (YPA) – The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, stressed the need to increase the number of destinations for flights to and from Sanaa International Airport, and to open the Hodeida ports.

In a news conference during his departure on Wednesday Sanaa Airport, Grundberg stressed also the significance of resuming the country’s oil exports, opening the main roads in Taiz and other provinces, in addition to paying salaries to all public sector employees on a regular basis.

He described his visit to Sanaa and his meetings and discussions with officials as positive, frank and constructive. “I had positive meetings with the authorities in Sanaa, where we had frank and constructive discussions about how to move forward,” Grundberg said.

The UN envoy expressed his great pleasure at the involvement of all parties during the crucial time, affirming that any agreement must have tangible benefits for all Yemenis, end violence in a sustainable manner, and contribute to a ceasefire to ensure the safety and security of the Yemeni people.

He pointed out the need to prepare for a UN-sponsored comprehensive political process to discuss the terms of communication for a just peace, expressing his aspiration to return to Sanaa soon to continue the meetings.

The UN official noted that after a year of unprecedented calm in Yemen, the parties must take valiant steps towards ending the conflict.
