Syrian academic warns of earthquake disaster on “Ataturk Dam”

WORLD, Feb. 08 (YPA) – Ibrahim Saeed, a professor of geography at Damascus University, warned on Wednesday of the continuation of seismic activity in Turkey, due to the huge quantities of water stored in the giant Ataturk Dam.

“The huge amount of water stored in the Ataturk Dam causes seismic activities,” Saeed said, adding that “the Ataturk Dam stores 48 billion cubic meters of the Euphrates River.”

He explained that “the Ataturk Dam represents a violation of nature, and the water rights of Iraq and Syria,”

“Turkey made a mistake when it established the Ataturk Dam,” he stated.

Earlier on Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the death toll from the earthquake in Turkey had risen to 9,057 deaths and  52,979 injuries.
