SANAA, Dec. 24 (YPA) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian welcomed to a proposal made by Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, to start dialogue with Egypt and resume diplomatic relations.
This came in an interview with the Iranian Foreign Minister on Saturday with the Mizan News Agency of the Iranian Judicial Authority.
“Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia’ al-Sudani proposed, during my meeting with him on the sidelines of the Baghdad 2 conference in Jordan, to start talks with Egypt to strengthen relations between Tehran and Cairo,” Abdollahian said.
” I welcomed his idea,” he added, pointing out that the talks would be at the security and political levels in the beginning, according to the Iraqi proposal.
The Iranian minister explained that “the Sudanese will take measures in this regard in the coming weeks.”
“We will continue to follow up on this issue in line with Iraq’s regional role to help promote dialogue and cooperation,” he added.
The diplomatic relations between Cairo and Tehran have been strained since 1979 when the leader of the Iranian revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, decided to suspend the diplomatic relations with Egypt in response to the signing of the Camp David Accords with Israel entity.
