WORL, Oct. 12 (YPA) – US President Joe Biden said in an interview with CNN on Tuesday that “there will be consequences” for Saudi Arabia after it partnered with Moscow to announce a cut in oil production.
Biden did not specify what actions his administration could take to respond to the Saudi decision. However, the US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said that that Saudi Arabia played a key role in that production cut.
He affirmed that Biden wants to discuss the future of US-Saudi Arabia relations with Congress, and whether those ties still serve the national interest.
The OPEC+ alliance, which includes members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the largest of which is Saudi Arabia, and ten other non-OPEC oil producers, the largest of which is Russia, decided last week to cut production quotas, threatening to raise prices.
The oil cartel’s decision was a diplomatic failure for Biden, who was demanding higher production.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan said that “the OPEC+ decision is purely economic and was taken unanimously by the member states,” adding that “OPEC+ countries acted responsibly and took the appropriate decision.”
However, the minister stressed that “the relationship with Washington is strategic and supportive of the security and stability of the region.”
