34 migrants found drowned off Syrian coast

DAMASCUS, Sept. 23 (YPA) – The Syrian authorities found on Thursday the bodies of 34 migrants who drowned off the coastal city of Tartus in the northwest of the country while they were on a Lebanese boat, while 20 others were rescued.

Russian “Sputnik” news agency quoted the Director General of Syrian Ports, Brigadier General Samer Kobaresli, as saying, “The search operations for the victims of the Lebanese boat have stopped due to the high sea waves, which poses a danger to the crews of the rescue teams and the boats.”

According to the survivors’ testimonies, the boat had set off from Minya in Lebanon a few days ago with the aim of emigrating, and it was carrying people of several nationalities on board.
