40 Palestinian detainees start hunger strike in Israeli occupation prisons

OCCUPIED QUDS, Jul. 23 (YPA) – The Palestinian Prisoners Club said on Saturday that 40 Palestinian detainees in the Israeli occupation prisons started a hunger strike in support of two detainees who entered into an open hunger strike to protest their administrative detention.

The club explained, in a statement, that the strike “comes after all attempts to reach a solution that guarantees the freedom of detainees Khalil Awawda (40 years) and Raed Rayan (28 years) have failed to be achieved.”

The Palestinian Liberation Organization’s Commission for Detainees and Ex-Prisoners Affairs said that “75 detainees will start an open hunger strike tomorrow, Sunday, in support of the two striking prisoners, Raed Rayan and Khalil Awawda.”

The Palestinian Prisoners Club stated that Awawda resumed a hunger strike that lasted 111 days after stopping it for several days after failing to reach an agreement to release him, while Rayan continues a hunger strike that he started 108 days ago.

It added that Awawda has been detained since December 27 and it was decided to renew the administrative detention four months after the expiry of the first detention order, which lasted six months.
