IOM: Saudi Arabia deports about 29,000 Yemeni expatriates in 2022

SANAA, June. 09 (YPA) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM revealed that Saudi Arabia has deported 5,440 Yemeni immigrants for the month May in year 2022.

The number of deportations to more than 29,000 Yemeni expatriates has been raised during the first five months of this year, the IOM said.

The organization affirmed in its monthly report that the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) recorded the return of 5,440 Yemeni migrants from Saudi Arabia during May 2022, compared to 5,898 last April.

The report indicated that the Matrix recorded, during the period from January 1 to May 31, 2022, the entry of 28,092 immigrants and the return of 29,390 expatriates to Yemen.

Over 8,000 African migrants and returning expatriates have entered Yemen during the month of May 2022.

The report also said in its monthly report that the organization’s DTM registered 3,228 migrants entering Yemen last May, compared to 5,212 migrants in April of the same year.

During the month of May, 1,256 Somali immigrants have been registered in Shabwa, in addition to 1,972 Djiboutian immigrants in Lahj province, south of Yemen.

The report suggested that the likely reason for the decrease in the flow of migrants arriving in Yemen, compared to previous months, might be related to seasonal changes, including difficult weather conditions and tides, in addition to the tightening of security measures between Djibouti and Yemen.

“Due to the humanitarian crisis, the deteriorating conditions in Yemen, and the challenges in moving towards Saudi Arabia, many migrants chose to return to the Horn of Africa.”

The report said in May 2022, DTM teams in Djibouti recorded that 496 migrants, including 489 Ethiopians and 7 Somalis, made perilous return journeys by boat from Yemen to their countries.

In May 2022, the IOM’s protection teams had conducted Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) flights to help stranded migrants wishing to return to their homes, via flights from Aden – Yemen to Addis Ababa – Ethiopia.
