Sweden, Finland officially decide to apply for NATO membership

SANAA, May 16 (YPA) – The Swedish Social Democratic Party (SPD) on Sunday formally adopted a resolution to apply for NATO membership.

In a statement posted on its official Twitter website, the party said it had decided at today’s meeting to apply for Sweden to join NATO.

If NATO approved its request, Sweden would oppose the deployment of nuclear weapons and permanent NATO military bases on its territory.

Earlier, Finland has decided to apply to NATO to join it.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said yesterday that Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO was not in their interest and would lead to the militarization of northern Europe.

April 11, the Kremlin said, “Finland and Sweden’s possible accession to NATO will not bring stability to Europe.”
